    Wetland in Öland, Sweden

Kapelludden is a wetland on the east coast of the island of Öland, Sweden, some four kilometers from the village of Bredsättra in Bredsättra socken, Borgholm Municipality. The area is rich in birdlife, and has important cultural remains (including the ruins of Saint Birgitta's chapel) and a functioning Kapelludden lighthouse.

Called Sik(a)varp or Sikehamn, the place was already a settlement for fishers in the Middle Ages and a trade center of uncertain importance, though local legendary stories claim that the settlement was so important that John III of Sweden revoked the town's trading privileges after complaints from Borgholm and Kalmar.[1]

    History

    [edit]

Whether the harbor of Sikvarp was really a commercially important place is not clear, and possibly exaggerated, especially since Johannes Haquini Rhezelius (d. ) describes it as a ruinous, derelict market town. No important ancient harbor structure appears to have existed, though there are remains of foundations and mounds.

Investigations in indicated mudflats, shallow pits lined with a layer of clay, and evidence was found of significant herring fisheries. The

Intrinsic Heritage Interest of the Lighthouse

A “Heidenstam” lighthouse is a Swedish lighthouse construction where you build an iron tower that is braced by pipes. The Heidenstam lighthouse got its name from the chief lighthouse engineer Gustav von Heidenstam and fryst vatten a well-known sight around the coasts of Sweden.

The pipes are then skewed by steel beams and wires. inre the iron tower there is a spiral staircase so that you can easily get up to the lantern and also the plumb line to the four-automatic. Before the lighthouses were electrified, the lenses for the lighthouse were driven by a clockwork with plumb, which was pulled up once or several times a day. The idea with the construction was to get a quickly built lighthouse with light construction details to be able to nation the parts on hard-to-reach islands and skerries. In addition, the lighthouse fryst vatten easy to take down to be able to be relocated if needed.

The lighthouses had British and American predecessors, but were designed independently of these. Kapelludden lighthouse on Öland was built in Construction m

Köping simply means trading place. During the Viking Age/Early Middle Ages, settlement in the parish was concentrated in the inner parts of the long, shallow and curved bay, which is partly surrounded by the high landborg cliff. The reason was an organized craft and trading activity that flourished throughout the th century. In addition to the protected bay and the good harbor, Köpingsvik was located at the intersection where the roads from the south, north and east converge. It is likely that the importance of the trading post decreased and eventually completely ceased because the shallow bay could not accommodate new and deeper-drafting merchant ships. Köpingsvik is unique to Öland and there is no similar place along the Småland coast. The trading post partly shares its structure with Birka and Helgö, but its scope has been smaller. During the High Middle Ages and follo
