  • The Swedish National Dress (Sverigedräkten) and regional traditional folk costumes (Folkdräkter) has both seen a serious revival over the past few decades, and I&#;m all for it. They&#;ve gone from almost being forgotten, to being worn by Swedes of all walks of life; from school teachers at graduations and the royal family at national day celebrations, to influencers on Instagram and actors on the creepy hit movie Midsommar.

And it&#;s not that hard to see why: the traditional costumes brings us closer to our roots in an ever-so fast-moving age, and they let us break free every now and then from the industrially manufactured wear-and-tear fashion we wear on a daily basis.

And besides, they look amazing! Here&#;s an overview I compiled of folkdräkter from the different regions of Sweden (these are just a few from each region, there are tons more as you will see further down):

And here&#;s my elementary school teacher wearing a beautiful local folkdräkt from Oxie (a.k.a. Oxiedräkt), on our 3rd grade graduation:

So if you&#;d like to find out more about the many different traditional Swedish costumes and dresses, I&#;ll be walking you through everyth

Blue Raincoat (Sweden) – No Wonder (track from covers album Red flags &#; flying monkeys)

If you’re going to cover anyone you may as well aim high, and that is what Blue Raincoat (or Blå Regnrock to give them their original Swedish name before they decided to appeal to an international audience) have done with this album which reprises work by Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and Neil Young. You can’t aspire much higher than that.

The trio comprises Gunnel Nornholm, Dan Arvefjord, and Mats Burman

I’m taking a punt here that they took their name from Cohen’s ‘Famous Blue Raincoat’. They’ve established themselves through live shows in Sweden in which they interpret those three artists predominately.

They’ve just re-released a album, ‘Red flags and flying monkeys’ which was preceded by a single version of Dylan&#;s gospel prayer ‘Ring Them Bells’ which also features on the album.

The album title intrigued me as well. It seems the term ‘flying monkeys’ is another way of saying ‘abuse by proxy’ or having someone else do the bidding of a narcissist. You learn something every day. I’m not really sure though how that relates to the selected tracks (to all of them, some of them, non
