Visit Smögen &#; Home to Sweden&#;s most photographed pier

Located on a small island, in the heart of Bohuslän, Smögen is home to the most famous pier in all of Sweden. Every year it draws thousands of visitors, and for good reason. Lined with colorful fishing cottages and old boat houses converted into cozy cafés and shops, taking a stroll on the meter-long pier is like walking in a postcard. The town truly comes alive during summer as the population grows from around people to over during peak season.

No matter if you come during the busy summer season or the calmer months during spring and fall it&#;s well worth a visit. I live only about 2 hours away from Smögen and every year I visit at least once. After coming here for around 25 years, there&#;s still something special about walking along the wooden pier while enjoying an ice cream in the sunshine. In this post, I´ll detail my favorite swimming spots, boat tours, and restaurants so you can enjoy the place as much as I have come to do.

Getting to Smögen

Getting to Smögen by car is easy, the island is so closely connected to the Swedish mainland that you might not even notice when you drive across the bridge.

The marble pool and giant’s kettles

The first thing you notice in the Hållö nature reserve are the beautifully smooth granite outcrops, slowly ground into works of art by ancient glaciers. You can find your own space here for sunbathing and swimming. Hållö lighthouse is open during the summer and offers guided tours. There are smooth cliff edges to jump from and steps down to the clear turquoise waters at Marmorbassängen. To the south of this lovely swimming spot fryst vatten Kålhälla, where lighthouse keepers used to live. There are several giant’s kettles around Slättehälla, one of which fryst vatten four metres deep! During the gods part of the ice age, rocks were gouged out and large parts were carried to the sea, which you can still see when you visit the island.

Seaside accommodation

The old radio communications building to the south of the lighthouse has been rebuilt into a ungdom hostel called Utpost Hållö, which also has a conference facility, a banqueting room, a chapel, a naturum and a kaffebar. Marmorbassängen på Hållö är en populär badvik med kristallklart vatten som skimrar i olika nyanser av grön, turkos och blå färg. Detta är en av många pärlor på Västkusten som ger en känsla av att vara vid Medelhavet.

De släta klipporna och det turkosa vattnet bjuder på en naturskön upplevelse som lockar många besökare under sommarmånaderna. Platsen fick mig att tänka på Grekland, där det finns en del liknande platser – exempelvis Sarakiniko på ön Milos.

Många dagsbesökare väljer att segla till Marmorbassängen med egen båt, men det går även bra att ta sig till ön med Hållöfärjan från Smögen eller Hållöexpressen från Kungshamn.

Har du möjlighet att segla hit med egen båt kan jag varmt rekommendera att göra så. Då seglar du rätt in i badviken och lägger till med båten. En härlig känsla när man får syn på det kristallklara vattnet!

När solen skiner är det magiskt med det kristallklara vattnet och alla dess turkosa nyanser. Många väljer att hoppa ner i vattnet från klipporna vid Marmorbassängen, men det finns även stegar med trappsteg ner i vattnet.
